COMMUNITY IN ACTION
Advancing Veteran interoperability

The VIP Community of Practice advances Veteran interoperability through sustained collaboration:  developing recommendations, building shared knowledge, and sustaining peer exchange that keeps participants learning.

HOW WE CREATE VALUE
Three pathways of Community work

The Community's work is grounded in practice. Every pathway below is structured to translate real-world clinical and operational experience into outputs that VA, health systems, and EHR vendors can act on: from formal recommendations to shared practices to cross-sector peer learning.

Interoperability recommendations

Focused workgroups develop structured recommendation packages grounded in real-world clinical and operational workflows, aligned to national standards, and delivered to VA leadership for consideration.

Knowledge repository

The Community builds and maintains a living library of best practices, lessons learned, workflow documentation, and a shared glossary of terms, so member organizations have access to artifacts they can use in real-world settings.

Peer exchange

Monthly plenaries and focused workgroup sessions create sustained opportunities for health systems, vendors, and federal partners to share challenges, surface solutions, and learn from each other across organizational lines.

COMMUNITY ROADMAP
Where we are and where we're headed

The Community's work is structured around four progressive phases, from building the foundation to validating cross-system interoperability at scale. Each phase builds on the last, and outputs from earlier phases continue to grow in value as the Community matures.

PHASE 01

Foundation
established

Governance structure, collaboration platform, knowledge repository, and initial workgroups launched

PHASE 02

Operating
rhythm

Integrated plenary–workgroup cadence, structured reporting, and standards tracking framework activated

PHASE 03

Recommendations & standards coordination

Structured recommendation packages delivered; additional workgroup launched; onboarding framework deployed

PHASE 04

Validation &
scaled influence

Cross-system workflow documentation published; pilot or validation activity initiated; annual state of the Community

COMMUNITY VOICE
Why members participate

"This community gives us a place to surface what's actually happening at the point of care — the gaps that don't show up in policy documents but that providers deal with every day when a Veteran walks through the door, and the system doesn't recognize them."

— VIP Community of Practice participant

The Veteran Interoperability Pledge

 Community of Practice

The VIP Community of Practice is the neutral, vendor-agnostic forum for Veteran-centered interoperability. In the interest of those who served, we develop recommendations for VA, cultivate a living knowledge repository of best practices and lessons learned, and connect the health systems working to close the gaps that follow Veterans into civilian care.
